What a steaming load of tank.

This, short of villifying, misinformed health and safety bollox makes my blood boil... as was taped to every Tesco pump today.

 

lol how would it trap you underneath a bike if you're sat on top? (ignoring this self igniting petrol tank for a second)

not an issue for me as i always get off but thats bonkers

 

Difficult to enforce as the majority of pumps are self service via credit card!
Sounds like some fool has slipped while filling their tank while sat on the bike and viola - new guidelines...

 

Yeah one accident out of millions of fuel tanks filled up every year so a new rule for all, makes sense.

 

Awwwww, doesn't it make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside (nowt to do with spontaneously combusting petrol tanks) that they care about you so much?

 

I always dismount when I top up, I always take my helmet and gloves off also so that's probably why. My thinking to take my helmet off is so they know you're not going to fill up and bugger off without paying

 

So now you're implying we're on the fiddle too 0s2? X

Am I the only one to notice that this is called the "Red guide"...? Not that I'd imply that Red fell off his bike while filling up or anything...

H&S gone mad - bet some plonker calls the number from beside the pump too, ignoring the no mobile phone sign use next to the petrol bowsers...

 

Whilst this health and safety nonsense drives me mad I did actually witness someone filling up there bike whilst sat on it manage to topple it over and get their leg caught under it and need assistance to get up as the now full tank emptied its contents everywhere!

 

Haha you lot all take the piss but this has happened to me! I stopped at a pump kick the side stand down and proceeded to get off, at which point the stand folded back up (obviously me being a complete mong bean didn't kick it down enough) and well you can all picture what happened next! Luckily I fell into the pump which broke my fall and saved me from dropping the bike, I then look up to see the lady at the till shaken her head with a smile on her face . So start engine back up to find another station as was far to embarrassed, epic fail!!!!! Lol

 

Very good friend of mine - Grant Wagstaff, had a lucky escape when refuel went wrong during pit stop at the 2014 TT.




Good advice I think to dismount before attempting to put fuel in your tank.

 

I've just glanced through the 'RED Guide'

It has the following to say on the matter:

'Dispensing petrol into the tanks of motor cycles. There are many recorded cases of fires having occurred due to the overfilling of motor cycle and scooter tanks. Due to the close proximity of the tanks to hot engine parts and electrics, petrol vapour has been ignited either immediately the tank has been overfilled, or when the motor cycle is being restarted. The reason for overfilling can be associated with the fact that the filling of motor cycle tanks is directly into the tank and not via a fill pipe as with a car; having the nozzle placed into the fill pipe of a car enables the cut off mechanism to operate before the fuel reaches a level where it can be spilt; this is not always possible with the tank of a motor cycle, particularly when the customer is trying to top up the tank, or during times when the petrol has been adapted for winter temperatures and the fuel is more volatile. In view of this, and also to avoid the contamination of customers’ clothing with petrol, the guidance is to not permit the filling of motor cycles whilst the rider or passenger are sitting on them.'

Guidance - so it is at the discretion of the company applying the rules as to whether they enforce it or not. It also says the fires often happen when the engine is restarted... so we're all doomed either way

I'm not sure filling a bike without a centre stand while holding it upright is safer. The guidance I'm sure will be ignored by all good petrol stations. Sadly, the ineptitude of the few impacts on us all though given I've never even heard of anyone torching themselves it doesn't seem like a huge issue.

 

And remember what happened to Derek Zoolanders friends at the petrol station!

 

Yep....seen it happen too, and kinda fell off myself once but luckily the sidestand was already down....spilled gas is slippy as all hell...it comes from cars usually, but that won't be much consolation when you're bike is going up in flames.
Pretty much always have fuel on hand anyway as I can fill the cans at the same time as filling my truck....saves one gas stop on the bike, etc.

 

I tend to fill the bike whilst sitting on it...especially at self service pumps. I can get loads more in when the bike is upright

 

I'm the same. Only time I had an issue is safe way Wrexham. Some power hungry managed turned off the self serve pump I was using as I hadn't removed my lid.
He came running out and started shouting about fumes causing me to blackout as I hadnt removed it.

 

Hey I notice that there's no issue with pumps spewing a pipe's worth of fuel over my bike before dispensing the fuel I want.

Hot bike, fuel not going into the tank. Fortunately there was no combustion but there was also no sign of an extinguisher anywhere!

 

The autoignition point of petrol is about 250 degrees C. At that temperature you wouldn't want to be sitting on the bike I can tell you. Obviously add a source of ignition like a spark and its a different matter.

Blacking out over fumes is a new one on me though. I always thought removing lids was to stop scrotes on scooters doing a runner. I seem to remember MCN doing a test at a fuel station that was particularly lid un-friendly who said it was so the CCTV could get a look at the face in case of crime. They went there and filled up a car dressed as Elvis with sideburns and big glasses (completely unidentifiable) to prove a point
