Just been out for a short ride and while I was out noticed I could smell the bike was 'hot' but when I got back and investigated I found a small amount of oil dripping from around the area of the sump plug.
It was tight but noticed the oil.was coming from further up the sump somewhere????
I also noticed I when I.dropped it onto its side stand I can hear a 'knocking' coming from.behind the fairing somewhere???

    Any ideas???

Ill take the fairings off tomorrow for a better look.

Possibly the re-occurring; casing bolts not tightened properly mate.?

I hope so. Simple case of tightening up I presume??

That seems to have worked on every occasion so far, so hopefully yes.

Stating the obvious, don't overtighten them though, you don't want to strip the casing threads.

Thanks v much. I will have a look tomorrow and post back.

  6. If not casing bolts and it's a bike with a few years on it....could be the oil crud behind and around front sprocket cover...liberal oiling of chain with various lubes by previous owners can build up oily crud there and can drip down the casing to the sump.

Its a 2010 with 3000 on the clock so low miles really. Ill know more when I get in from work later. Hoping its something minor :???:

My bet would be on the loose engine casings too, though I'm not sure about the knocking you describe - whereabouts was it coming from and was the engine still running?

No engine wasnt running. It sounds like its coming from around the casing on the left hand side, behind fairing??
It only does it when the bike drops onto the side stand. Its not the stand itself btw. V strange. Hopefully all will be revealed later. Could it be the casing bolt thats worked totally loose maybe??

It's not a worn chain falling against the chain guard is it? The only other thing I can think of offhand is either the fuse box is loose or the vacuum valve/flasher unit assembly has come away from its mounting on the front left of the engine either could be tapping on the inside of the fairing as the bike falls over onto its side stand.

How about the retaining bolt having come undone, allowing the front sprocket to slide along the output shaft spline & against the inside of the casing.
That chainsaw may then eventually allow "considerable" oil loss.! :?

Well just taken the fairings off and ive found the culprit. It was a bolt, a couple actually that had worked loose.
How tight are they supposed to be because all the ones I tried where quite loose. Didnt take much force to turn at all. Anyone know any torque values for them??

Give us a clue which size bolts? Sensibly you don't want to be doing any bolts up too tight with a torque wrench unless you trust it and the req'd tq value isn't at one end of its scale.

Most the other casings bolts were pretty loose tbh. Iv basically tightened them just to biting point if that makes sense??

  16. Where abouts are these bolts you done up, I've got the same problem! Can see where it's coming from

  17. Are the on the engine casing?
