I used "servo tape" that's normally used in/on radio-controlled cars, planes, etc.
It's fairly thick by tape standards, to give a bit of cushion...
I'm almost certain that would be repairable.....a welder, preferably one who knows bikes, will know how to sort that out in no time.
Don't worry about chicken strips. As you get broader experience, you'll get narrower strips.

Liner. The "redundant" half of the zipper is just to stop you shredding your shirt, sweater, skin, etc. should you choose not to use a liner.
