Having purchased a 03 KX 125 from Ebay and it subsequently blowing up after 5 laps of my local practice track i've decided to do a ground up rebuild! The pic shows what is left after i stripped it today! Next step is to get the frame and maybe wheels powdercoated. It needs new bearings throughout and of course the £700 engine rebuild..... After that i will probably end up getting new plastics/sticker kit! Trying not to think about the price!!! I will never get my money back on it but it will a minter of a bike!
I have a KTM125 in the same state in my garage. My son bought it only to find the crank case is cracked. Sourced a good second hand one just need to put it all back tpgether. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
That brings back fond memories I loved my old Kx125, and then racing the RM250 Have fun with the rebuild
So after cutting the rear linkage from the frame (ball ache) I decided to go and see the local powder coater. To sand blast the frame and powder coat £80, which i think is pretty good. I then asked about my wheels, How much it would cost to coat the hubs and rims at the same time. A further £40 so £120 in total for frame, rims and hubs. Next thing on the list was to take the wheels apart........ Oh my god, major ball ache!!!!! Started with the easier rear wheel, as you can see from the pic i had to heat the nipple with a blow torch to loosen it. All going relativity ok until my mole grips break 8 spokes from finishing! Wasn't all that happy at 11 last nite. The front wheel looks to have steel nipples that have rusted to fuck. Not looking forward to this! Then at around 11:20 i decided to break out the grinder to get the bearing off from the bottom of my clamps! If in doubt get the angle grinder out!! Ha...... It was a good feeling when i finally got it off! So that's the project up to date so far. Off to buy a set of mole grips before i jump on the bike and head up to the fest! See u there guys n gals!
Holy crap mate that is some serious work, good luck and keep on posting I must get back on with the KR1-S things have slowed a little recently....
Yes mate will be there later on this afternoon/evening.. Not on the Kwack though lol, that will be for sunny dry days only
Work has come to a stand still recently. But having picked up my freshly powder coated frame/wheels and triple clamps today work will recommence shortly! Will get pics up soon. Need to find a new swingarm now to! More bloody money!!!!! ha
Get some pictures up matey...... Sounds great so far!! I loved doing all this to my WRF450 a while back..... Just keep a eye on the bills mate, I didn't and going back through them makes me want to cry!!
The bills so far scare me! That's why i'm in no rush to finish this project! It will get done when it gets done. The swingarm is nice and clean, but not clean enough for me. Off with the tatty stickers and out with the autosol and wire wool. Going to give it a brushed effect like the exhaust! Few pics of the exhaust before and after....
It of advice on the swing arm mate, if it's scratched up and you want a more original finish then take it to your shot blasted and ask them to bead blast it, it'll give it a great finish like it would have had originally..... Just a thought.....
It's been a very long break from the kx re-build but it is back on! :0 Engine was split to fit the new crank, Con rod and main bearings, was also treated to a new piston. It was put back together and is now sitting sweetly back in the frame! The shock/ Linkage and swingarm are on now too. With a bit of luck i'll get it running tomorrow night! Trouble is i won't wanna ride it now it's all shiny and new! lol
It's ALIVE!!!! The bike sounds so tight and crisp! So happy! Just need to get a few more bits and then i can finish putting it back together!
