Hi All I decided to do a coolant change on my D675R and have sprung a leak!! All I have done so far is drain the coolant I then started to fill the radiator with some distilled water, only put in 5-600 ml and there is water leaking from the coolant outlet. My intention was to flush the system and then add the coolant. Uploaded a photo and I've marked with a RED square the hose I released to drain the coolant. The YELLOW arrow and square indicate where the leak has started. My son and I tipped the bike side to side to drain as much as we could and I've got the bike on a rear track-stand. I'm perplexed. It's very strange as I had a 100 miles round trip to Hawes via Ribblehead yesterday, no problems; and 100 miles the day before too. Your kind guidance would be greatly appreciated as always.
Are you sure it's a coolant leak.? The reason I'm saying that is that the expansion container (on the earlier bikes anyway) is barely large enough to accommodate the increased volume of coolant when it warms. Consequently if the coolant is filled above the mark (which is actually effectively a Maximum mark ) any excess will be ejected from the overflow, the end of which just happens to be located behind where your yellow square is placed in your image. Just a thought....
Thanks for taking the time to reply. It's a 2014 bike. After draining and rocking side to side I only added 5-600 ml of distilled water and noticed the leak. I checked the bolt and tightened it, leak continued. Loosened it off and wiggled the pipe and nipped it up slightly again (don't know the torque setting). Leak stopped! I wonder whether whilst rocking the bike it inadvertently rested this outlet on the container edge. Will be keeping a close eye on it but for now seems to be holding, although the nut seems quite loose, if I tighten it, the leak starts again. Thanks again, if anything changes will let you know. BTW: Used Comma Xstream G05 50/50 mix. About 2l went in, am waiting for the bike to cool now after running it up to "fan on" temp. The temperature stayed quiet "normal" (whatever that means !!!) Very grateful for your reply Always willing to listen and lean EDIT :(and learn!).
I'm not sure I'd be comfortable running with the bolt even slightly loose just to stop the leak. If that ever came out while you're on the bike you'd get massive sudden coolant loss and probably all over your rear wheel. For the sake of 2l of coolant (although you can probably capture it and refill) I would remove the small pipe connector and replace the o-ring.
Hey thanks - I was worrying about it last night and think that might be the most appropriate and safest thing to do. QQ: Is it simply remove the bolt and pull out the pipe connector?
