1050 Throttle mod

    here you go...........

    On one of your throttle cables about 75mm from the grip is a strange rubber boot.

    This splits in to two pieces. Slide them away from each other.

    When you have done that you’ll see the adjusters.

    Using a 8mm and 10mm open end spanner slacken the locknut and then turn the 8mm part by hand to take up the slack in the cable.

    Turn it a few full turns or until the movement on the grip feels about right.

    Then start the engine, and turn the bars from full lock to full lock.

    So long as the engine doesn't start to rev up your ok.

    Now readjust and repeat or tighten the lock nut.

    Well I've just spent the best part of an hour in the garage trying to install this mod and can I get the bar end off!!!!!???? Can I f&*k!

    All I've ended up doing is rounding off the nut in the end of the weight!. I've thrown my tools back in the box and come in with a sulk on. To say I'm pi**ed off is an understatement. I unscrewed it until it the weight was a good inch away from the end of the bar but as I unscrewed it a thick strip of black rubber came out and the bar end wouldn't move, it just kept spinning as I turned the nut.

    Looks like I'll be trying to source a new bar end nut now and giving up on the mod altogether - So much for 10 minutes!!
     
  3. It is about 10 mins after you get the bar end off. I spoke to Triumph dealer about this when I was fitting my R&G bar ends, I had the same problem as you StG. In the end took the bike to dealer to do, they broke both and had to give me new ones. They said the reason is that Triumph started to glue in the crew that holds on the bar end weight because people were losing them whilst riding.
    There is another way apparently if you slide the throttle tube rubber away from the bar end there are 2 holes in the clipon and can release the whole bar weight there so no need to get that screw out that holds the bar end on.

    Maybe that black 'rubber' was glue then!? Seems a bit stupid glueing them in - looked for the holes you mentioned but no joy. Gonna get some R&G bar ends too and will probably end up taking them to the dealer to fit.

    Right! I've finally done it although I think I'm gonna need a whole new bar end as it wobbles all over the shop now and I can't tighten the nut.

    As for the mod itself, I now have no slack at all but the bike idles OK and when I steer to full lock on either side there is no increase in revs. I presume that this is normal or should there still be a little bit of slack? Not had chance to test ride yet as raining here but just blipping it in the garage and it seems so much more responsive!

    I have no slack either, its fine, as long as it doesnt rev on turning bars....

  9. I used to have trouble using the full throttle range without adjusting my grip however I found the real problem was my riding position! I've attached two pictures showing different riding positions. The first one is how I used to ride the bike before the track instructor corrected me. My weight is as forwards on the seat as I can get. My arms are pretty much parallel to the forks which makes counter steering less effective. Some of my weight is on my arms which means I can't feel the front wheel properly or steer as quickly. Using full throttle is difficult because of the bend in my wrist. The second picture is how the instructor told me I should position myself. My weight is as far back as I can get it and no weight is on my wrists. My forearms are parallel with the ground so I can counter steer effectively. I can use the whole throttle easily without significant bend in my wrist. In this position the bike feels and handles much better and I am more confident. The downside is this position is uncomfortable and I can only keep it up for short bursts (30 minutes tops). I tend to use the first position in urban areas where I'm cruising along slowly. I then switch to the second position when I hit the nationals / on the track.

  11. Yep that's my standard track day gear. Although obviously I wear a helmet. Can't be too careful!

  14. I went over to windy corner a few days back. This was my local dealer until the new show room opened in leicester. Really nice guys over there, espically the south african fella, Mike. If you ever need any parts it will be worth calling this man. Really helpfull and they had the throttle grip I needed.
    Although no longer a triumph main dealer they still stock parts and hold lots of other bits.

    I've got the 1050 Throttle grip and has made the ride so much better, real difference.
