I had the misfortune to have to travel up the M1 for a cluent meeting yesterday.

The speed limits were varying between 40 and 70, even when the road was clear, and it's possible I may have exceeded the limit in places

Should I be worried about picking up a penalty ie are there active cameras and how strictly enforced are the limits?

Not all of the signs have a camera attached to them so you may be lucky!

You can normally spot them above the gantry. They do work, but only when the speed limit is showing. Or so I've been told. Always slow down for them then ping it afterwards.

They do only work when a speed limit is shown, tried & tested that theory! The camera is a huge grey box that sits just underneath the gantry so you can spot them before you get there

Tut tut... and usually the cameras give you a bit of leeway. The endless 50 limit at Daventry does

I do love when they're forward facing. Just smile and wave boys.

  8. They do work they only work on average speed limits ;)

We had variable of 50 for nearly 5 miles then hit 40-50-60-40 we all went through at nearly 65

Neither of us had a ticket. They are only there to so called ease congestion when approaching built up areas and major slip roads
