I've been through all the previous posts on this and wondered if anyone can confirm two points for me. I'm about to replace chain and sprockets. I'm going -1/+1, and sticking with 525 pitch. -Am I right in thinking that with this ratio the chain length remains the same as with standard sprockets, i.e. 116 links? -Will this setup result in the rear wheel spindle sitting roughly in the middle of the adjustment range with the chain correctly tentioned, which is presumably where you want it? Many thanks.
I've just done this and it's sitting 3-4 marks from the rear. Which is exactly where it was with standard gearing. Had this done previously and they took a link out. It was pretty close to the front to the extent I adjusted the rear tyre guard.
Thanks Electric kid. I've just got round to doing this job. After changing the sprockets I offered up the new chain with 116 links and found the spindle to be a bit further past the centre point than I'd hoped, although probably in about the stock position as suggested. I was quite keen to shorten the wheelbase slightly to improve turn in so I decided to go down to 114 links. This gave me a wheelbase approximately 20mm less than that in the owners manual (1395mm), but I guess as the chain stretches with use this difference will reduce slightly. I still have plenty of clearance to the swingarm and hugger. There are just over 6 notches showing on the swingarm adjustment. Would be keen to hear if anyone else has done something similar, and how they find it? I've been out for a short test ride and it feels pretty good so far!
I run 114 links mate, works well for me. ( However obviously that's not exactly a ringing endorsement as a performance improvement, but if you want to lap Cadwell at 2.5 mins I can assure you it won't prevent you )
