I was looking at the yamaha xsr900 online and it looks like it has passenger pegs that completely fold up under the subframe. Ive been trying to find other examples / ways of tucking the foot pegs like that to see what else is possible but I haven't been able to find anything else.

Any ideas on how to recreate it?

(i wanna keep my passenger pegs for now as my girlfriend is slowly warming to the idea of riding with me)

Fwiw my old CBR400rr has very tidy folding rear passenger footrests. I have never (and would never) take a pillion on that bike, but the design of the folding rests is so discreet that it's not worth removing them.
If you are looking for something to use as a donor, then imho it may be worth looking at those little Honda pocket-rockets as a possibility.?

hm ok ya that makes sense. i was looking at the mounting for the striple's pegs. it goes deep into the subframe area so would need to find something were the mount comes down or it pivots backward. probably could jerry rig some sort of spacer too

could also make my own with some sort of click in hinge that i can screw a rod into

Finding a rod hinge/joint/clevis that locks into place is impossible. Haven’t found anything remotely close.

new idea: use a kickstand bracket with the stops on the mount that limit max angle of the rod. Pair with the upper part of an adjustable kick stand and put some sort of peg mount thing on the bottom

Thing is, the integrity of pillion footrest cannot be over stated, can it.?
There are a lot of adaptions / modifications that I will happily attempt if I believe my efforts may improve my vehicle. However the only alteration of someone else's passenger experience I have made is to remove the facility completely (seat cowl & removed footrests).
Good luck anyway, and do please post up about how this develops .

ya I know. That’s why I’m looking at options with high weight rating or are generally very sturdy.

there are plenty of sturdy brackets that could work:
Clevis brackets to a rod end
    Roll cage door bar hinges

My struggle right now is finding something that will firmly hold the peg rod in place.

That’s why I was thinking kickstand but reposition the spring so that it is pulling the rod to the open/ down direction as much as possible and maybe like a magnet or small quick release to hold the peg rod up against the subframe

An oem solution from another motorcycle would be ideal tho but I haven’t found anything/ don’t really know where to look

    new idea:

    using:
    https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle...MI1MGgkO25ggMVsdDCBB39bgXSEAQYDSABEgKam_D_BwE

    1) super sturdy h bracket into current mounting point - boxed or something like that

    2) circled blue part of the city mount bolted to the bracket (green) - the squared off part of mount goes on the bracket like it rests on that horizontal part.

    3) Ditch the circled red part, peg goes directly into that hole.

not adjustable on the fly but that’s ok. I keep an Allen key set under my seat so just pop off the seat, unscrew, adjust position, tighten, seat back on

    Looks possible.
I can't help thinking that you are putting yourself through a lot of trouble, when it would cost absolutely nothing & be 100% safe if you were to simply remove the pillion rests when you are riding solo.
On the occasions when your girlfriend wants to come with you, it's max 5 mins to bolt the OEM ones back on for the day..

oh completely. this exercise doesnt make any sense but its fun for me to figure it out. the safety thing is a big concern for me so if in my hunt i dont find something 100% safe then im not doing it. but like i said its fun for me to figure it if its possible

My Diavel has foldable pillion pegs but there is a sticky out bit designed into the rear subframe which when unfolded stops the pegs in place and prevents them moving further with pillions weight on them.

New plan: found these adjustable highway pegs on eBay. Instead of the bar mount, I’m gonna try a custom thick steel bracket with the indexing holes for the dowel pins.

2 holes for the bolts to the frame, one hole surrounded by small holes for the peg arm and dowel pins, upgrade all the Allen bolts to the best I can find.

This will require a minute of undoing the Allen bolt, rotating the arm into position and screwing the bolt back in.

should be nice and sturdy tho a little finicky but whatever. I already keep an Allen key set under my seat

The Ducati Diavel has always had well hidden pillion pegs. (he doesn't open them but you can see them here)

From what I can tell the diavel’s are vertical folding so I don’t think that would work. To mount them vertically it would defeat the purpose.

Oh nvm that’s the older diavels. these look similar to the xsr900. I’ll look into it and see if I can get some measurements and figure out if I can use the stock mounting bracket somehow.

    Thanks for the suggestion
