The R needs a bit of tlc and I may as well get it serviced at the same time, but I'm not sure where to go. I've lost faith in my usual place when they failed to spot and then correct an oil leak. Twice. My second choice is Greenham Kawasaki, but they always have a mahoosive waiting time as they're so popular. The other place I was thinking of is Premier in Abingdon, but I've never used them and I don't want to pay dealership prices if they turn out to be a bit pants. Has anyone used them, or can personally recommend somewhere decent? The quality of the work and trustworthyness comes above £.
If you wanted to venture Swindon way, I get on well with MotoCave in swindon, Jon who runs it is ex Triumph service manager and they do a decent job from what I can see. They have mostly done tyres etc for me but always friendly and helpful
If the bike has niggles and needs a service in your shoes I'd consider making the round trip to see Clive Wood in swineshead, Lincolnshire. I know that seems mad but he's brilliant, knows everything about these bikes and actually gets things sorted out. He's also good value. I went a similar distance to you to get mine sorted having lost faith. You also get a brew and a bacon sandwich . Early start and a day out but if you want the job doing right I'd have a discussion with him.
Swindon's a bit too far. And it's Swindon . I'll keep that in mind and have it as my Plan B if I can't find anything closer. Thank you x
I can't say that I'm keen on using any professional that uses images like this on their public FB page. Soooo last century. Plus, the fork seals have gone on the R and I want to get that sorted as soon as so I can get out and use it again. Going on a trip to foreign lands Oop Norf isn't really practical
I don't really do FB...but I suspect strongly Clive is from the last century. LOL. Indeed though...long way to go with bust fork seals. Hope you get sorted. I know the struggle to find reliable folk.
I'd thoroughly reccomend muddysump, he's done the last 2 services on my Daytona R. David is really friendly, knowledgeable (ex-triumph mechanic) and thorough. He only uses genuine Triumph parts and is about half the cost of a main dealer.
What about the bloke from muddy sump, he is a mobile mechanic nice and friendly I used him a couple years ago to do my clearances and a service but he told me that my clearances where fine and never charged me anything extra except for the rocker cover gasket. I am pretty sure he is normally booked up but might be worth a go, i only used him from what other members on the forum told me Sent from my iPhone using 675.cc
The time and £ it'll cost to see MS just ain't worth it for me. Is he even still working? I did try and look him up yesterday but couldn't find anything recent on his website or FB page.
Muddy sump doesn't keep his FB or web page updated. I think he says to email him on his web page. The struggle is real finding a good mechanic. Finding one who is also good at communication and social media might need a scoping exercise by Lord Lucan, riding a unicorn
Iirc Mr Janey is proficient enough a mechanic to completely strip & entirely re-build a 675 motor. Isn't the obvious choice to be found "a little closer to home" ? As for the distance to travel & what it will cost, well that would appear to be well covered too wouldn't it.?
Mr J is a bloody brilliant mechanic. Mr J is also very stressed and more than slightly overwhelmed with trying to fit in work, other projects, quality time with his amazing partner... so I'm taking some of the pressure off of him and dumping forks and servicing duties on someone else for once.
I used to get my old bike (ZXR400) serviced by S&M in Banbury, it's run by a guy named Chris who's really knowledgeable and always did a great job, plus his prices are very reasonable. I've also used Kings two wheel centre in Kidlington in the past and can't say anything bad about them. Obviously these places aren't Triumph specialists though, S&M is a little independent setup and Kings are a Suzuki dealership.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far. This is turning out to be a bit more complicated than I thought it was going to. But it's a Daytona, so I should've expected it to be a pita. My two nearest Triumph dealerships are fully booked until mid to late August. The couple of independents that I've tried haven't bothered with getting back to me. And the place that I trust and where I'm going to get the servicing done can't fit me in until July and... They can't do the f* seals! So it's probably going to be a trip to MH Racing. Why doesn't this happen over the winter when I don't have these stupid ideas of actually being able to use the ruddy thing?!?
I ended up booking in with a small, local company called TB Motorcycles in Didcot. I was a bit trepidous of using them as they're an unknown quantity and I like the safety and reassurance of trusting my baby to someone I know. And who, in return, know how precious I can be about my bikes. It was a good choice! He's a one-man outfit and seems to really know his stuff. Plus, he's a mad keen biker himself and spends his weekends racing. I got the bike back during the week and, ok, it was as manky dirty as when it went in, but all the work's been done well and the forks are no longer incontinent. I took it out today and it's amazing how different it feels and how much less of a battle to ride it is with the forks refreshed. Plus Mr J now has all that time freed up to work on the other one
