Sound like a decent damper is a wise investment almost regardless of cost Chris, the law of averages says that one day you'll get a tankslapper that'll throw you off, the cost of that may be too high to bear thinking about if you know what I mean.
Something I would recommend for track use is a lock stop. They cost about £30 and are easy to fit. I made a sall mistake at Lydden Hill where I was coming down the start/finish straight when I was changing into 3rd, however I mistimed my clutchless shift and ended up mis-synching the foot down motion and the opening of the throttle which resulted in a massive lock to lock slapper when the power kicked in. Luckily, I had my lock stop on so it wasn't that bad, however I still crapped my pants and spent a few seconds thinking about what would have been had I not fitted it before I manned the fuck up and carried on. It won't make a single bit of difference to your damper situation but if you do have another slapper (oo err), the bars won't move as much and it's a cheap part until you get something decent sorted.
Very good point Mitch, the lock stop also stops the std frame lock stops getting broken off in an off and the assy stops the intake tract getting broken in a similar situation. A good mod and highly recommended for any track 675.
I presume the lock stop kit, stops you from been able to use steering lock. As I use mine daily, not an option.
Just searching Ohlins steering damper threads and came across this one. So looking for some sound advice: I've never experienced any issues with the bike on TD's; although I suspect it's due to me not driving the bike as hard as it's capable of. With this in mind I'll be looking to pushing on just a bit at my next TD and wondered if a replacement Ohlins top mount steering damper is a good idea on my '13 bike. I checked Harris' site and the damper and mounting kit is £294. What do you reckon?
Be interesting to hear what the serious speeders have to say mate; Something that strikes me is that the OE one was very quickly identified as a weakness on the Mk1 by the racers. Yet I have not heard a single mutter about similar issues with the newest version.? Maybe it's just that it's taken as a given that it will need to be done, so anyone who would have had an issue will have had it done.? Maybe the altered geometry has reduced these headstrong tendencies.?
Ive got a WP damper on my track cbr600 f sport 2001 Id love to get a bracket so i could fit it to the 675, i havent done much research yet into whats available But i do know the mounting kit for my cbr is a harris one I have a 2008 model Anyone help me out on this?
I looked into getting a mounting bracket for a Matris damper I had on a Speed Triple but at £160 just for the fitting kit I ended up buying a second hand Sprint damper for less! 2 for the price of 1!
When i had a quick look around the net last night A Pit Bull steering damper came up as a low cost option Which looks like a big circular type device that sits around the top yoke nut and between the tank Anyone know if these are any good, the style looks strange to me compared to a conventional damper, but when you look at Honda bikes with their ESD damper they look like the Pit Bull style one
Yes the pitbulls are supposed to be good but I heard they need regular servicing to stay in good working order (anecdotal rather than 1st hand experience). The Pitbull/GPR ones are similar and work pretty well by all accounts. The Sprint or Matris ones sit across the tank which may be a more conventional look. I think the Pitbull can flip up allowing you access to the tank bolts without having to remove it if that's a concern
i bought a scotts damper had to import from usa worked out cheaper than hyper pro or gpr from uk really wanted the hyper pro at first but was put off by negative attitude of the place i was gonna buy from
Nope it's back to front, probably with the phone camera changed around, all the dial numbers are back to front. Good spot though.
never noticed that ha ha it was taken with a phone and resized maybe switched round during edit ill see if i still got original and look
always thought something looked diferent in that photo but never clicked on see if this one looks right
I refilled my stock damper with thicker oil. It's better, but not by much. I had some spare fork oil lying around, so it was a totally free mod. Wanted an aftermarket one, but won't be able to sneak one past the missus without her noticing. Still, it's a decent stop gap until I do get a new one.
