I'm going on my second motorcycle roadtrip in a months time and I'd like to plan the route online. What recommendations do you have ? What have you used in the past? It's all going to be on road, starting in Richmond, London and ending up in (at?) Lake Como in Italy. What I'd ideally like to do is plot waypoints and then adjust the route between them.

I'd also love to know the name of some great roads to ride? The Stelvio and the Grimsel Pass's are on the Bucket List. Which others? I'm hoping to get a combo of amazing roads and equally amazing scenery.

    Cheers in advance, Crispy

Here's a little taster of what I'm hoping to see:

  2. Do you have a satnav?

If so my mates on the SV forum developed the site motogoloco, you can plot out a route and upload it to a satnav to follow.

Don't think you can adjust the route after though...

done a similar trip myself, it was inspired by a holiday i had with the wife to Lake Como, a guy on a Ducati pulled up at the lake edge, had a fag and rode off, he was on UK plate and i thought i wanna do that, so i did! Lake Como was great but the roads getting there were superb, massive fan of Germany, the B500 is great if you want some fast sweepers. Dont get excited or build the Stelvio pass up, its not that great - but the roads getting there are. Stelvio is busy and hard on the bikes brakes and chain!! (thats if you hoon it of course) I will dig my route out tonight and let you know some road names, espectially one from Austria, 45 miles if the best tarmac, following a river, stunning scenery and no traffic. i actually arrive at my hotel and turned back and done it again! Also, i recommend this website for booking accomodation... http://mobikehotel.com/

Stelvio is VERY over rated we got halfway up it and turned around, B 500 MEGA. Best road I have ever done is route napeleon starts in Nice but can be picked up from other points. I am no tecno so can't help with loading routes and way points on to satnav when you learn how let me know ha ha

I've also used the B11 from Starnburg through Kochel but that brings to into Innsbruck. Depends on where you're coning from but I'd recommend coming in via Interlaken and using the Grimsel pass / Furkha pass and the Albula pass. Excuse the spellings.. From there you can go through Davos and St Moritz then south into Como. That B11 is a stonker of a road but it'll drop you too far east for Como

    For planning?

ADAC maps are great. Mapsman (Google...) sells them printed off if your prefer a paper copy. Good roads are highlighted.

Best Biking Roads, either app or (sloooow) website. Give you an idea of what you're in for.

I use co pilot sat nav on my iPhone. What I like about it is that you can 'drag' your route to ensure it directs you along the roads YOU want to ride, not it. Used together with the above two, works well.

  9. I would go to Here.com on computer and save all the waypoints that would interest me.
I would install Here app on my android phone, download (for free) the maps of the countries I would visit and the waypoints will be synchronised.
The app Here is very good for navigation. You can also set to avoid highways or toll roads. It shows the speed limit and can even warn you if you go over it.
I did last year Grimsel and Furka passes, but by car. They were nice and quiet and with every turn I was wishing to be on the bike.

Here is a photo taken in Jully 2015.

You should give Instagram a go. It's the nicest of all the social media. Always really visual and interesting.

Right, I know I've left this a little late but I'm planning a rough route for my trip and France looks pretty dull as far as riding roads?!

Can anyone suggest a route from Calais to Strasbourg that's not all dual carriageways?
