How best to repair glass fibre track fairings?

Discussion in 'Bodywork' started by Frequent Flyer, Aug 18, 2016.

  1. No need to buff it up before lacquering mate that what it is for. Just a light keying with some grey scotchbrite will do. Once the lacquer is dry buff away

Thanks @buzz675 - If I scotchbrite the lacquer, will the fairings need another "top coat" of paint or will it just add to the smoothness of the lacquer layers/add some shine? (Can tell I'm no artist!)

Made the most of the sunny weather to get the lacquer on and thought why not do the decals too...

Not 100% happy, the larger ones are a bugger to fit without the odd wrinkle/air bubble, so expect I'll be out again later on with the missus' hair dryer and a razor blade...!

Certainly look ok at 15yds, close up they really look like I've fitted them myself (with a bit I help from the kids)!

    BBQ o'clock now though.

  4. Some been out all day. The topcoat (red and black ) needs a key which is what the scotchbrite does it won't add anything to the shine just help the clearcoat stick. If you put plenty of coats of lacquer on then rub done with 1200 or 1500 then buff but be careful how much you rub down and buff. This is where you'll get your gloss from

Had a trial fitting of the track fairings earlier today and looking pretty good from 5m+ - just need to figure out what else can be taken off the street loom and cable tie it all in place - motocal have said they'd be happy to make some more decals up for an exact fit, once a I figure out the dimensions in vectors or something similar...

Anyhow, taking the lights etc off must have shed another 7-8kgs off the bike and it feels like a different beast wheeling it around, so can only imagine what it'll handle like on track without the excess weight...
