Don't go for the wide-angle HD version, Mark...the width of the shot is awesome but sacrifices the depth of the image...the wide-angle version is best suited to applications like scuba-diving and such, where depth is not so important , the standard HD model works better for motorsports....how much do they run over there in the UK??
Mmmmm...the HD cost me @ $300 when buying direct from GoPro ...300 quid is around $460+ ...normally I'd say that it might pay you to buy direct...in this instance I think it definitely would!! ....Alternatively, I could always act as a "middle-man" and ship it on to you, marked as "warranty replacement" to avoid the customs charge...let me know if I'm able to help in any way.
