After having a great night last night watchin the stereophonics in brum, I decided to go for a quick run up to the ponderosa cafe for my dinner. However my bike would not start  I put it on charge for half an hour and it managed to start, so i thought right, shoot out on it now while its running and it should charge up a bit while I'm riding. 10 miles up the road I realised I would run out of pertrol if I did not stop. So, called in a service station, filled up and went to start the bike and......dead. Managed to get the missus to come up with some jump leads and got it going again, with the intention of going straight home. However, as i was putting all my gear back on the bike stopped. At this point I start to suspect the rectifier/regulator. Let the bike trickle charge from the missus car for 20 mins and hop straight on and go to her parents house (1 mile away). Just as I've stopped on her parents drive the bike starts to conk out again. So this time I go and get my optimate from home, and left it to charge for two and a half hours. Started first time so hopped straight on it to get it home. Left it running and got the spare key to get the seat off, and put a voltmeter across the battery and its only giving 11.9 to 12.1 volts across it. If I'm correct I should have approx 15 volts across it it the rectifier/regulator is ok. I say this as I had a similar problem last year when the dealer left the rec/reg disconnected and the nice RAC man put his meter across it. Not 100% about the figures though so just thought I would ask if anyone if they have any ideas ? I'm going to give the dealer a bell in the morning to ask them also
    Cheers :)

Same thing happened to me last year. I ended up having to replace the reg/rec but it was still on warranty. Triumph stuck it in a place where it gets too hot, and I think it is quite a common fault.

Your figures are pretty close Jimjam, I would expect between 13.2 and 14.6 with the engine running, 12.1 is bad. But check the plug first, if it's out of warranty - might be quick fix. Stupid location does mean premature failure sometimes tho.

Cheers guys, its only a year old so still has 12 months left on the warranty. I will check the plug first thing, and if its not that then its a call to the dealers.

  6. Last year, during the 12,000 mile service, the mechanic found that a wire had corroded through at the connector from the regulator/rectifier. The reg/rect was replaced under warranty. AND it's only after two years winter's riding that I'm putting on an aftermarket rear hugger!

Update ! Bike went to the dealers last Monday, and they confirmed it was the reg/rec. They have replaced it, along with the battery under warranty. I picked it up this morning and everything is fine now :D

Good news to be sure...but I still don't get why Triumph have not solved this.....it was a BIG problem with the D600....blessedly the D650s don't seem to suffer from it, and yet it's back again with the D675s...that, and the Exup probs that everyone seems to have, really DO put one off from "upgrading" to a 675! :erm:

I think the reg/rec was moved from beside the exhaust, to inside the R/H fairing panel a couple of years back.
    Did that improve reliability?
Anyone with a later bike had a regulator failure?

Mine is inside the right hand fairing and the only problem i had was after removing the fairings for the first time. There was this piece of something with lots of wires and was not in the the downloaded manual or on any of the sites i looked on for advice. Figured out where it went eventually tho.

It does seem well protected where it is now, and no sign of any road crap being flung up at it.

Mine is an 09 model with the reg/rec inside the right fairing. It's not as straight forward as it seems however, as last year a month or so after I got the bike, it developed an oil leak from the cylinder head. This turned out to be a porous head (tiny pin size hole in the casting). The thing is, after the dealers put the bike back together they did not connect the reg/rec up correctly (only one of the two plugs connected) and when the RAC bloke rescued me he noted that the reg/rec was roasting hot. This information was passed on to the dealer but they informed me that it would be ok. Now it may be that it was fried last year and its been slowly going, or it may be that its just gone now :? Personally I think it was damaged last year
