I've just been out for a quick spin to grab a few bits for dinner and noticed about 5 mins in my engine management light was on, I havnt noticed anything wron with the bike, just wondering if it's ok to ride back to Devon from Reading with it on? I can get it sorted when I'm back, I'll try the 3 start idea before I go but just making sure it's ok to ride!
    Any guesses?...

Hi pete mine is on too. I've had the bike stood for about 4 months with battery off on charge while I've been working on the bike. Now it's all back together the light has come on, just need to run through the 3 cycles and should go off

Just spray some lube round the Exup valve and cables. Start and stop three times and report back. Bike goes into limp mode if it's serious. If it's riding ok then I'd do the trip if the start stops don't turn the light off.

  4. I have same problem. Disconnected battery over winter(about 3-4months) reconnected to give the bike a run and noticed warning light is now on. Bike rides fine and I have started and stopped it more than three times but light has not gone out. Like I said it runs fine, have checked exhaust valve cables and that moves freely? Is this a common fault when the battery is disconnected for a long period. Do you think it will self cancel or will it be a trip to dealer to get fault cleared?

  5. My Engine Management Light is on too, but only came on after 2 weeks without the battery charger on it (it's had the charger on it all over Xmas but I turned it off when I went abroad in the New Year - Dohhhh !).

I rang Stuart at Performance Triumph Cheltenham. He said that the most likely reason that the EML is illuminated is because the voltage dropped below 11.5v at some point and that this was enough to generate a fault code. It certainly rides fine and the exhaust valve rotates like it should when the ignition is switched on. Stuart said that as long as it's got the right oil and coolant levels, then it's probably the battery voltage dip and the fault code will remain for three heat cycles even though it's been recharged since I came back.

I've done two heat cycles so am just hoping for a good day tomorrow to take her out again and hopefully the EML will clear at the end of the third cycle when the engine gets cold again, hopefully.

If it doesn't clear then it'll be a trip to Cheltenham for them to stick their diagnostic machine on it and tell me if I have a real issue and/or to clear the fault code.

Interestingly, the Haynes Manual also mentions the ability for the EML to self clear itself if the original problem or reason it came on in the first place clears and is not repeated within the three heat cycle period.

    Richard.

  7. Stone cold start, up to running temp, back to cold IIRC. 3 of those clears CELs as long a the fault is resolved eg sticking exup. If exup still sticks, CEL comes back on. Tuning software will do it in seconds

Ah I see, that's quite slow to do, up to temp 5 min, about 45 to cool, 3 times mmm, I'll remember that if I ever get the light.

So whats the starting it and leaving it with no throttle for 12 min do, Sure I read that somewhere?

Well I stopped to get fuel about 10 mins into the trip today and when I started her back up again the light went out, must have sorted itself out! :D

With the heat-cycle thing, you start the bike and let it run....eventually, the fan will kick in and cool it down some....and then again, and then one last time...after the fan has cooled the engine a third time, the engine light will hopefully have reset itself and you can turn the bike off. As SiW has mentioned elsewhere, 3 starts is a better way to do it...less risk of damage to the engine/cooling system.
