Hi @Bigmac, Got the OBD code reader today, and as I thought, nothing. Wouldn't even power it up when plugged in to the diagnostic port. Based in darkest Somerset (Well, it's dark now - matches my mood quite well!) One thing I have thought, is that it appears that all the power from the battery goes via the Starter Solenoid. When I took it off to check the connection, a small brass-looking plate came off the live side, and it looked quite corroded. I've ordered a new one just to eliminate it...
YAAAAAAYYYY!!! All sorted now. As suspected, it was the starter solenoid. Couple of fault codes to look at, but I've had a celebratory cider so can't take it out until tomorrow. Many thanks to those that offered advice....
Just a thought (I know, dangerous!) I usually apply a smear of vaseline to the battery terminals to inhibit corrosion, would it be worth doing the same on the live and starter leads on the solenoid? Strikes me that they are quite similar animals, and given the amount of crud that I found in that area, it may help to protect it?
Never a bad move to apply corrosion inhibitor on electrical connections imho. Fwiw I almost always do so by default.
