Just 3 weeks ago, I purchased a 2010 675 (2nd hand) with just 800 miles on the clock. I brought it home and having started it a few times (to show my mates), the battery died. I assumed that the previous owner hadn’t had the bike on trickle charge over the winter. I connected my Optimate 4 and let it charge for a few days. Next time out it, all was OK – I start/stopped about 4 times, until the last time (outside my mates house) and all was dead (again)… Took the battery off and let a very helpful M & P’s (just down the road from me) charge it and perform a ‘drop charge’– all was OK?! Back on bike it went and after 4 spins all seemed fine – until today! Filled her up, went for a 20 minute spin and I noticed the petrol light flashing and the dash flickering (mostly at at traffic lights). The bike also seemed to be missing a bit (almost as if it was being starved of fuel). Having read forums on the subject – I knew that if I’d stop the bike – it wouldn’t start, and true enough – outside my house, I stopped, and it wouldn’t start again. I popped the seat off and the battery give a reading of 8.85, and I know that it was normal (approx 12.4 not running and over 14 while running) before I’d left. I’m not happy! At the moment, I have zero confidence in this bike – not a good introduction to Triumph! Should have I stuck to my trusty, naked Jap?! Can someone confirm that this is the R&R?? Or is it an ‘earth’ problem or a faulty, factory fitted immobiliser /alarm? The bike is still under warranty and my nearest dealer is ‘Bevans’ in Cardiff (1hr away). Could they change the part while I wait? I’d appreciate some help – it’s driving me mad! Thank you :?
First off...you're covered under warranty, so at least you won't be out of pocket no matter what it is. Secondly, diagnosing any electrical problem is just going to be a process of elimination....rare for an R/R to go with so few miles on the bike, though. Good luck!
I have an 09 bike which died after a few runs out. Turned out to be a faulty battery but I didn't get any of the fuel light/flickering clock issues before hand.
Hi Lynd, try charging the battery, and then starting the bike again - let it idle for a bit and check the battery voltage with a multimeter, if it's a dodgy battery it'll probably charge ok and will show 13.5v or thereabouts, but will be unable to keep that charge. If it's the R/R the battery voltage will gradually go down from the 12.5 - 13v after a full recharge to the eventual 8.5v you found. An ammeter would tell you properly, but the starting current would kill it. Hope that helps. DG
Hi Lynd, my local dealer had a £50 collection diagnosis fee but I never paid anything cos the rectifier and bad battery which they found out were covered under warranty. I felt a bit let down by the triumph brand but got a loan bike free from dealer and when got my baby back remembered exactly why I chose her in the first place and smiled all the way home!!!! Give the dealer a call and they should sort you right out. Good luck getting it sorted.
The R/R's go at early stage sometimes-warranty fix and you will get the upgraded and far superior kit fitted-doesn't only happen to Triumphs but Triumph used to fit a type which has a small but unpredictable failure rate.
