Just pondering stuff for later this year maybe...anyone here use a DSLR? i'm no photographer, but i like sharp images, my compact is a Panasonic DMC- TZ5, i think its just over 10 MP, i've been looking at DSLRs, and its a minefield...i like the Canon stuff, Nikon, not a big fan of Sony or Pentax... Anyone any info... not sure on budget, always start out thinking ebay sub £400 end up spending double... I see they are common at 10Mp, then 16 ish and max at over 21...ouch!!
I've been thinking the same. I use a Canon Powershot G5 which I originally bought for self taken fish capture shots. I had friends using the same for fishing magazine work and they recommended it. Great camera but it's been superseded many times. It's latest guise is a G12. Also a great point and press. I wanted a Canon 450D but that's already changed into the 500D and now the 550D I've given up on the for the time being!!!!!
Canon 550D or of you want to go mental a 5D We shot this on it with Primary school kids http://www.bbc.co.uk/21cc/gallery/project_2 check them out and give me a shout i may be able to sort out a bit of discount through work as i've bought shed loads off canon in the last two years. DId you see Sherlock on BBC One last year ? Lots of it was filmed on a rig of 5Ds Or alternatively this was taken on a 5D http://css.motogp.com/img/fanzone/wallp ... 037463a052 550D is still a very, very good camera
Moving images...I'm looking for detail on stills only i think, not going to do moving images he says, i dont really know about f stops and appeture priorities etc, i can, or should i say im happy with my holding, scene setting, so i really just want point and shoot with dogs danglies images, big zoom is not important as im guesing its bike and kids only..so a single lens will do.. id like to stick it in my rucksack on a ride out, and take some snaps, like the calendar images we had at christmas..just want sharper than i have, obviously if the auto modes are simple i can switch to those...hope that makes sense?
I bought my GF a Nikon D5000 which takes some great pictures. The clarity is something else compared to our small digital. I've taken it to races but i need a larger lense really to get some top quality close ups. I did get a top pic of Josh Brookes flying over the Mountain at Cadwell. I got the pic from quite a distance but because the pic is so clear, I zoomed in oJosh and cropped it and it looked as if I was right next to him. Just not as portable as a good smaller digital.

That's the other thing. I've only just got used to having a bum bag on whilst riding. I don't really want to use the rucksack just for a camera!
I have the Nikon D50...this model is since been replaced by a newer model d40- which i believe has been replaced by the D3000, but its a great camera and "makes" you a pretty good photographer without much effort...sharper, deeper images.... The thing was we took it every where for the first month or two of having it but quickly got tired of the size and all the gear you can or not take with, lens cleaning gear etc...Also you look like a tourist at all times, worried about leaving it in the cafe/bar/restaurant etc...... My point is we use it now and again and love but 49/50 times take the little pocket size sony for conveniance less worry etc...... Something to think about... JC
Just having a nose now...jees im talking myself in here.. the differences seem D5000: 12.3 Megapixel Nikon DX format CMOS Vari-angle 2.7 inch LCD colour monitor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens Video facility records 720p HD movie clips 11-point autofocus system with 3D focus tracking EOS 550D 18.0MP fixed 3" same lens 1080 or 720 HDMI 7 point focus
Hiya JC, as i said i have a great Panasonic pocket unit, but want a bit more "sometimes" i guess?!.... i could sell my pocket one, as my daughter got a nice one for xmas, ideal for days out, slips in her handbag.. Better bike shots...
You certainly will!! The shots in my gallery are taken with the D50 - I wouldn't part with pocket camera though. Its nice to have both. I have been meaning to learn more about photography and get more involved. One day I'll get around to it. So you only really need to decide canon or nikon. Maybe also look at extra lenses you might want in the future. I think nikon are a bit more " reasonable" Jc.
Ok JC, i'll keep my compact, probably not worth much used... So, i've been invesigating a product and price, £1000 today is about £700 tomorrow and £500 by monday...usual story...So, top end of a budget thats not there is this baby: Canon EOS 550D (UK name) Rebel T2i (USA name) Kiss X4 (Japanese name) all the same camera, just the name change for different markets, the Kiss has English and Japanese instructions and menu, the others have European languages etc, i only speak English so game on, i love an import at a saving.......... So: 18 million MP, 3:2 LCD screen, full 1080p Hd video with audio...etc... Canon Kiss x4 Body (550D in UK, Currys price £649.99) Canon 18 - 55mm i s Lens (i s = image stabiliser) 18 - 55 = to 29 - 88mm in old SLR money Complete accessories as normal, battery, charger, English Instructions, cables, strap, software etc.. 8GB SDHC card £514 delivered I've checked these guys out on lots of forums from Pistonheads to cameras, they trade as Photo-Direct on ebay selling imports or they have a unit in Surrey, lots of good feedback and delivery in around 3 days Ebay Linky I'm going to have a think...the model below this is the 500D again with varients (Rebel T1i & Kiss X3) .. 15 MP, lower res' screen 4:3, less HD recording options same accessories , same dealer £447, a saving of £67...i think for £67, i'd go large and get the 3:2 screen and the 3MP extra... Sometimes less is more? Any thoughts....
Sounds good. Ticks most of the boxes. I would agree with your train of thought and spend the extra £67 for newer version. Not sure you need I.S on a 18-55 mm lens but it's nice to have. Are they selling lenses also? You may want to get a nice 55-200mm- or there abouts. (I.S would be good for this one) the trouble with DSLR's is the lust of addition lenses is endless! Jc.
Yep the 55-250 i s is £137 delivered, it's cheaper to buy separately £651 total. If you buy it as a kit they want £799 with a 55-200? I'm assuming most people don't look at the separate prices, and assume the kit is value. I've seen on the net and on a eos user type site some stunning images with the kit lens, for bike n kids it will do for me, until my Lotto cheque arrives Dave!
Forgot to add, you can turn the IS off, sure you knew that. Camera link demo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpxqF5Yu ... ata_player
If its just better image quality you want Steffy, most DSLR's are much of a likeness these days depending on the number of pixels but anything that shoots in RAW format should suffice. The quality is so much better than JPEGS. I bought an entry level DSLR at Christmas (Canon EOS 1000) and can't believe the quality of RAW v's JPEG
By the way, if you're wondering the difference - RAW shoots the image as the sensor sees it with absolutley no automated compensation by the cameras fancy gadgetery allowing for much easier and better post processing with software like Photoshop etc. I'm no pro but took some basic black and white landscapes over Christmas, underexposed them a bit with a polarising filter and I'm very pleased with the results after a bit of tweaking - I'll post up a few if you're interested
I'm very interested, not sure I'm doing the right thing, so I'm info gathering. If I have masses of pixels, will it show up grainy detail, I've not got PS, or any editing software or experience, so advice is welcome! I guess I like to selective enlarge and keep quality, odd 10x8 print, nothing massive, I appreciate quality, if its noticeable. Maybe a £300-400 unit would be more than ample 10-15MP? I'll pm you my email, maybe you could send me some samples, so I can see the image quality, doesn't matter what there off. Cheers!!
