I was ready to go for a ride on Casper on Sunday. Did the usual checks, but noticed some oil spray near the oil filler cap.
Since I had done her 20000km service myself, I thought I I not tightened the cap properly.

When I looked closer, I saw that one of the crankcase bolts was almost completely out!!!!!!!

Upon checking further, there were another three that were loose, and I still have to remove the fairings to see if there are others.

Casper is a 2010 model, and no one has tinkered with the crankcase, so a BIG HEADS-UP to you all.

I'm pleased that's all it was mate.

This year we've had quite a few members notice that some of their casing bolts have loosened, so it's a really good idea for everyone to do as Casper suggests & check them.

  3. Do you really mean the crankcase bolts it one of the bolts holding the two halves of the crank case together ? Or was it one of the cover bolts ?

I've had this problem, but fortunately I noticed when I was fitting some engine protection that the clutch cover bolts weren't tight. I checked every cover bolt on the engine and iirc 80% of them weren't tight and needed attention.

Good to hear from you Casper - even if was for the wrong reason. Hope things are going well for you. :)

  5. Glad to hear your okay. My bike has gone off to another life now with someone else else I would be straight out there checking them. Especially as it was the same age.

  6. That's a bit scary

  7. What is the torque settings on these bolts? I might go and check mine !

  8. I have had one fall out! I check them every other short ride. Does triumph know about this?

  9. The torque setting these is stupidly low. 8-10nm I think I got told.

Yeah think they are 8nm if that..

  11. That's right you told me when we were putting mine back together. T3 told me not to go mad on them either as the threads strip easily.

Mine wernt loose but I could crack them with a finger and thumb on the ratchet, I just have them and firm twist of the wrist tighten and will check em when ever I can.

  14. So would 'thread lock' be a wise thing to use if the torque is so low?

No, threadlock can be stronger than the aluminium so when you remove the bolt its likely to pull the ally thread out with it. :?

  16. I checked all mine this evening as I removed the fairings in preparation for some servicing work at the weekend. 80% I think I could have removed with my fingers as they were so loose.
