    Hello all,

I have been a member on this forum for a couple of years now and being a designer I have had enough of poor motorcycle parking. I am therefore designing a useful, futuristic alternative and could really use some feedback from fellow enthusiasts. Please use the link below to access a 'survey monkey' questionnaire to answer 10 short questions in regards to your motorcycle/parking experience. The data collected is anonymous and will not be shared beyond myself. I hope this is not in breach of any forum regulations and if so will be happy to apologise and remove (if possible to do it by myself). Feel free to comment in the thread if you have further points/ complaints/ examples however these posts are linked to your username as per the rest of the forum.

    Many Thanks,

    LG

  5. What is a "useful, futuristic alternative" to parking a motorcycle as all you need is a space surely?
Or do you mean a motorcycle storage facility / unit situated in public / private spaces?

Many thanks all and 0S2, your close in terms of a facility. Your also right about just needing a space but that's all that public parking seems to offer motorcyclists these days and there could be so much more on offer in regards to security, gear storage, corrosion protection, etc. So I'm hoping to design something that really addresses the variety of needs motorcyclists have that are different to cars. I'm afraid I can't go into too much detail as I have yet to come up with some final designs but happy for questions as its all development :)

  11. Only reason for my question is that there are already a pretty good German designs already out there but I'm guessing you've seen them already?
I recall when I first started riding and would park my bike in multi storey that was actually manned, they kept the first few bays for bikes and it worked a treat as it was inexpensive. Sadly this changed when they became unmanned and there wasn't any real security as you "parked at your own risk".
According to most reports I've read the average age of bikers are 40+ and bikes are second/third mode of transport, maybe they have the money to pay for the type of service / idea you plan to come up with.

For one reason or another, society has changed, theft is common place and is turn it fuels fear so fortress mentality if rife... I'll stop there and wish you good luck :)

Thank you 0S2, you raise some very useful pointers and I will ensure to bear them in mind when I move to the conceptual stage. With the economic crisis and the introduction of the living wage in the UK, the costs of employing people is going up for jobs like security. So I'm not surprised to learn that you have experienced these cuts. More cuts make theft go up and public opinion responds as you say with 'fortress mentality'. It would be impossible to completely clear motorcycle theft worries however with such mentality comes a market for improved security. The cost shouldn't be as high if the public use is high enough, ideally the cost of using such a unit would be equivalent to parking fees currently because it would be offering the service we require as opposed to going 'above and beyond'. That's the hope although I can't guarantee low costs as that's for finance departments to decide. If you can think of any other points feel free to raise them, I appreciate the response :)

and Red, I'm exactly the same. It's interesting to note that 'Around 26,000 motorcycle are stolen per year, which represents 22% of all bikes sold (MCRG and MPSVU, 2010)'. This is a huge failing of the market almost a quarter of all sales :S

Thank you all for the responses you made to the survey. I believe I have collected enough research and have designed a few solutions. I still have some technical aspects to work through but hopefully this is something we will see on our streets in the upcoming years. Again many thanks to you all for taking the time.

done!!! theft safety 1 yes! I'd love to park my bike and when I return to it and find it still there. That would be a nightmare without being stranded in your kit. AWKWARD
