I always use AVG. It's free (google it). Never use anything else now

  4. I've built my own PCs for the last 10 years and all that ever goes on them is a vanilla windows XP. I don't run any third party firewall or antivirus and I've never had a problem. I do have to fix everyone elses computers though, so I'd put the risk factor on users doing stupid things.

Cnet is good for all your free software downloads and you wont get spammed every 5mins through using them. i also use AVG free and have not had a problem TBH though if its only £15 and you happy with it i'd just extend the licence for another year. save having to install something else and i find these things never uninstall cleanly anyway youll be left with some remnace of Norton hanging around.

I've always found that NOD32 Antivirus is the best. The program is light enough to run it wont slow the computer and equally it's very good at preventing virus's.

Equally I'm testing out the Iolo System Mechanic Professional at the moment, and I'm fairly impressed - one of those applications that does all to keep the system in tip top condition. :p

    Here we go hehe!!

Saving £10-15 is not going to break the bank obviously, i just wondered if others spend on it every year or not.

Ok, hands up, the odd Adult site, internet banking and the forum stuff, thats about it...so....Norton or AVG free...

    Get a freebie.
No need to pay and the "Internet Security" packages suck and just drain your system like crazy.

All you want is a nice simple AV program.
ESET was rated best on an AV comparisson site I was linked to a while back that did testing - cant remember the URL.
It's quiet and simple and just does what it needs to do - stops Viruses. It doesn't try take over your whole machine and intercept every single transmission to and from the internet.

    Read this if you want:

I personally hate Security Suities and when I have to fix peoples machines I often find these are what is causing the problem.

    3yrs as a System Administrator
    2yrs as an Integration Engineer
now 3yrs as a Consultant (Software).

  14. Pesonally I don't like Norton or the way they do business these days. They sneak their online scanner onto user's pc (they'd probably call it 'bundled - but I know of at least 5 people that had it installed their machines without knowing where it came from. Whilst I agree that the users probably failed to read all the info before they installed an app, it could not have been that clearly displayed that Norton was included), then they tell you you have buy their full product to fully cleanse the pc. They're using similar technologies to the many scareware fake av's that its supposed to protect you from. Forceful tactics to get onto your machine and scare into into parting with your cash. I had to install Norton 360 onto a new PC over the weekend and when it comes to the register screen, there is no option to skip, no next button until you provide them with an email address, again, forcing the average user to comply with their demands. I had to use task manager to exit without providing an email address. I'm not impressed.

I used AVG antivirus and Zonealarm Personal Firewall for years, and thats what I'd recommend to anyone with just 'end user' pc experience. Pretty much install and forget. I'm now using Comodo Internet Security suite. Its free and has some great features, but its very much 'in your face' and maybe a little over keen at times, which can be a little intimidating for the less PC savvy. What I like about it is that it asks whenever an application wants to make changes to the system, so you become aware if background processes are making unsolicited activity. It also 'sandboxes' programs that it doesn't recognise, forcing them to run in isolated memory and preventing them from making any changes to the hard drive.

I can also highly recommend the ESSET online scanner. Another freebie that has picked up threats that many other AV's have failed to detect, including AVG and Mailwarebytes. Its a manual task to run it, but worth doing every now and then.

Edit: I forgot to add that Comodo free supports server operating systems whereas most of the other freebies only support desktop OS's, which is why I changed from AVG.

I think the above only works for us techies - most non techies I know end up with Virus's pretty fast if they try the above.

I'd suggest using the Windows built in Firewall and virus software from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security ... fault.aspx

There's really no need to run one of the more feature rich firewalls, these firewalls protect you from inbound and outbound traffic, where as the inbuilt one generally only does inbound. Although I think in windows 7 you can configure this to do both, personally I don't use windows at home any more...

    A little more information:
Inbound - Traffic coming in to your PC
Outbound - Your pc talking out, such as your web browser. The only real need for this is when you are concerned that software on your pc is calling home without your knowledge. The only real need for this other than for the ultra paranoid is if you think your pc has become compromised. But if you're running virus software then this is unlikely to happen.

One final point to note is that most of you will be connecting through a router which in the majority of cases is a firewall.
