After a couple of years off the road, my Daytona was stolen and recovered but written off and I then crashed my Thundercat, I got my Daytona back on the road last year. I only used it a couple of times but it was running really well. I have started to use the bike again as a daily commuter. Over the last week or so though, it has developed a strange problem when starting. It just wont start, and after about 8 or 9 turn overs the bike stops trying. Retrying it (or trying it from scratch) with a bit of throttle gets the bike started and then it runs perfectly. Its reminds me a bit of what happened when my RR went a few years ago, but I have checked and there is just over 14v going across the battery when the engine is running, so don't think its that. One confession, before I sold the written of Thundercat I drained the fuel tank and put the excess fuel in the Daytona. I originally thought the problem could have been the old fuel but I think that should all be used now. Any ideas?
Does sound like it could be a faulty reg/rec. What year is your bike and has it had the recall done for it? It's definitely worth testing the output with a multi meter as that will tell you if the battery is charging or not. Also worth checking the fuel filter so see if its clogged up with cack.
Strange that it starts when you give it a little gas. If you've had the tank off recently then maybe a kinked fuel hose?
Gets my vote for where an issue could be if it starts with a bit of throttle. Does it idle nicely or die if you let the revs drop until its warm?
Engine will turn over if it has a faulty crank sensor, these things can magnetise themselves sometimes causing a duff reading to the ecu,
I had that before I got mine on the road Lithium battery, just cranked over and over but never fired up. Took her to bits, new plugs, ecu flashed again of all errors codes, Bit of throttle on first few start ups to warm the plugs up and not had issues since. If the battery is reading 14v while checking voltage under load it's not the reg rec, have a check also on the cps ( two pin connector ) reads 200ohms if it is healthy Then check the starter as they can mess around
Thanks for the responses and sorry for not checking earlier. My Bike was on 07 but have had the RR changed on it already, it gave up the ghost on my about 5 years ago. Im wondering if it is my battery, although it was new last year - but I didn't disconnect it till November and the bike had been staring for 4 weeks before that. The reason for that is that it only turned over for about 6 turns this morning before cutting out After a little bit of throttle to start it, the bike idles fine. If there was crud in the fuel filter would that effect the general idling of the bike as well? Ill be able to do the check on the cps probably tomorrow. How would I know if the stepper motor is at fault. Andy
