ok so I have my 2010 daytona, heres the strange thing about a 1 to 2 litres of oil is disappearing from it weekly , im 1000% sure it doesnt have an oil leak so where on earth is it going to .....

  2. The oil fairy is taking it whilst your sleeping. Failing that its getting burnt. Some badly seated piston rings are likely the cause. Did you run it in yourself?

  3. How many miles are u doing? I am using about 0.8L every 1000miles on my Daytona which I believe is one of the higher oil usage amounts, some people's bikes don't use any. I would say 2L is far too much, around 1L per 1000 miles is about the reasonable limit

Oil consumption varies and a well documented legal case in Ireland years back left a lad with a knacked engine because he didnt check it at all and it ran out of oil. Triumph didn't give him a new engine btw.

Running in is part of the problem, and some bikes don't get the bores properly bedded during the break in period because the Triumph sticker on the tank is overly conservative and doesn't match the blurb in the owners book (which is fairly conservative in itself) and new owners think they're doing the right thing by going easy when in fact the opposite is true. :(

Unless you have an internal leak I'd say its going past the rings and getting burnt, what mileage are you doing to get that kind of oil consumption?

iirc Triumph state reasonable as 1L per 1000 miles.

2 litres in maybe 120 miles, took it to bike treads today they said go 200 miles then come back, and dont put any more oil in

  7. There is a very serious issue with that engine!!!!! Is it running properly? I would expect the exhaust to be black and smoking a lot with that sort of oil usage?

I would get it booked in ASAP

2 litres for 120 miles? Shit! That's burning 0.5l of oil for every litre of fuel. That is very very wrong. Take it back to the shop you bought it from if possible Jon, first order of business is to check the engine breather is not sucking oil out, after that its down to rings, bores, pistons, valves and guides. Phil is right the tailpipe should be almost dripping with unburnt oil, but if its oil it'll be acrid oily white smoke.
You can check by getting it hot, running down a hill on a closed throttle and opening the throttle at the bottom - look in the mirror as you open the throttle and you may well see a big puff of smoke, if that happens its a very good chance the bores are shot and oil is being sucked up into the combustion chambers on the overrun.

It may turn out to be a broken ring or two btw.

  9. Yep, that's a really serious problem and needs looking at professionally mate, top if up, then get it to the dealer and get them to sort it out

Bit of a thread hijack but what is the best oil to use? Where can I get it from?? Im in need of some myself.

  11. Dude this is like a tyre thread, u will get 1000 totally different opinions!....

Essentially make sure it meets all of Triumphs specifications then get the one u can afford; mine has always run on Castrol but purely because that's what they put in from new!

What level do you fill it to on the dipstick and are you sure the bike is level (not on sidestand) when you measure?

  14. Shit the bed that's a lot of oil. I ran mine in as per the master tech recommendations of an extra 1000 rpm every 100 miles and he was very clear, use all your available revs. Mine doesn't use a drop, ever!
