I'm not big into cleaning normally using Muc Off, brush, hose, ACF50 on a rag, close garage technique. However, i've found myself with a spare hour here and there over weekend whilst Miss Lady is working and Junior is having one of his naps. I usually have the bike cleaned at some point on Saturday and i have never waxed or polished a bike in all the time i've been riding. I was wondering about polish or waxing the other day for some stupid reason. What would folks recommend for waxing or polishing a bike and is there a knack to it?
Can't go wrong with AutoGlym super resin polish and then Autoglym extra gloss protection. The polish is a good all rounder that will clean the paintwork and cover light scratches, and it polishes off easily. You'd be amazed how much crap it will pull off the paintwork (especially wheels) when you think its already clean. The extra gloss protection goes on after and will make the water and dirt run off, also seals in the polish. Just wipe over a thin layer, no need to polish in, leave for an hour then polish off. Don't polish the screen unless your trying to remove existing scratches, the EGP will be ok though.
This might sound dumb but I've never actually thought about polishing the wheels before! Going to give that a go!
I use megs polish no.3 has a canuba wax and can put it on by hand as it warms up. Wierd maybe for you guys. I also use showroom shine which is a waterless cleaner and polish. Very good for a quick clean.
I use the auto glym too very good stuff doesn't miss a beat tbh. Mine needs a clean too bloody salt all over it and dirt but in all this crap weather don't know if there's any point!! Sent from my LT30p using Tapatalk
Tank, fairings, carbon mudguard/hugger ok, i don't think you would see any benefit on the forks and may damage the gold anodising eventually. I would definately not use it on the frame, on my 06 bike i used Autoglym vinyl and rubber care on the frame/swingarm and black plastic trim/indicators, this brings the colour up if they look a bit dull, buff it off if you don't like it too shiny. I've not tried it on the 13R yet though as it was already spotless when i bought it but also the frame and swingarm look to have more of a textured finish than the old bike. Don't forget if you haven't got tank pads then clean the sides of the tank after with washing up liquid or it will feel really slippy when riding :?
Autoglym is good but leaves white residue in all the nooks and crannies, and on black plastic. I prefer meguires. Doesn't do it anywhere near as bad. The wet look stuff is really high gloss and the tech wax is great for polishing out small imperfections. Mr sheen also great for quick touch ups and fly removal.
I use Meguires 1. Wash with Meguires Shampoo 2. Meguires Paint Clenser 3. Meguires Polish 4. Meguires Wax to seal it all off Just wish I knew how to clean Chain and Sprokets better as they dont have let the bike down
I used WD40 for the chain last time and it was amazing, it looked like a new chain, great on wheels too. Just be careful not to get it on the tyres
thanks devastata Might have a go this weekend and give it a damn good going over as i think its never been done. I have only done a couple of thousand miles on it and the chain and Sprocket has always looked dull and ugly.
no probs mate. I would also suggest getting something to go behind the chain. ie between chain and wheel to to stop the over spray from going on the wheel
WD40 can ruin the O rings. I can get my chain gleaming using wurth brake and chain cleaner spray that liberally on a microfibre cloth then hold it on chain as you spin wheel. 2 mins later gleaming! And I'm guessing from yr user handle you are in Manc? Wurth have a trade store in Ashton Moss and it's about £3 a can rather than £7-£10 on eBay or in shop!!
if you use wd40 to clean your chain make sure you wipe it all off with a cloth but they actually do a chain cleaner now which is similar to the wurth stuff
As above, if u use wd40 to clean ur chain over time it will damage the rubber o-rings. I've used the wd40 chain cleaner myself finished off with wd40 chain wax and it works an absolute treat!
Had a gander in halfords at autoglym and Maguiars. Then the little lad pulled this out if the clearance bin £45 worth down to £9!! Will give it a go.
